Texas vs. Mexico

A strategic experience where participants are drawn into the “gameplay” of a model situation, in which they rapidly revert to type and act naturally based on their own predispositions and fixed ideas. A key part of the scenario is the subsequent analysis, looking together with the participants to find analogies, map opportunities, and shift fixed behavioural models toward the more effective.

The Game in Principle

The players are divided up into 4-5 member teams, where the majority side with TEXAS and the rest with MEXICO. Between them stands a borderline — the Rio Grande river. Both “states” are joined by a bridge, open only at certain times.

A rep from FOOD, Corp. comes to TEXAS, willing to buy up sets of TEX-MEX products. The Texans don't have any, however, and before they can sell them, they have to buy them from the Mexicans. They, too, don't have them, but have access to the villages where the individual ready component products are available, from which the requested sets can be made. If they wish to sell to the Texans, they have first to buy from these villages. The buy and sell prices are set to have a 50% margin.

Each team enters the game with a specific number of dollars and it is up to them how best to deploy this “investment fund” for best return. The Texans have to know how to explain to the Mexicans what they are after (typically having forgetten to ask just how much FOOD, Corp. will be wanting to buy, and so being left with a large surplus) to make up the sets and sell them.

As long as they continue to try to get the better of each other, they keep going in circles. There is a lot of money to be made by a team which partners with one over the river, clarifying what they need from one another and working together in cooperation and trust. They will “turn over” their means and make money, not at each other's expense, but on the margin between buy and sell prices.

The gameplay lasts 4 x 20 minutes — during this time the bridge is open. The number of product sets in the game is limited by an algorithm (based on the number of teams).
